Dear Friend,
During the past week, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation has been featured prominently in the news. Two articles showcased the Foundation's unique business model and important advances in research.
- BusinessWeek highlighted the Foundation's business model and promising results from our collaboration with Vertex Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Vertex is developing VX-770 and VX-809, drugs that target the basic defect in CF.
Exciting results from an ongoing Phase 2a clinical trial of VX-770 suggest that this oral drug may improve the function of the faulty CFTR protein, the key protein associated with CF. Patients who took the drug showed significant improvement in several key CF measures.
VX-809, currently in Phase 1 studies, also is aimed at improving CFTR function.

- The Boston Globe highlighted the Foundation's $37.7 million expanded collaboration with EPIX Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
EPIX has successfully developed a computerized 3-D model of the CFTR protein.
EPIX scientists are now using the model to identify sites within the Delta F508 mutation of CFTR—the most common mutation in people with CF—that may be good targets for treatment. The Foundation is working with EPIX to discover drug candidates that may work on those sites and possibly restore the protein's function.

We're thrilled to share this exciting news. Thank you for all you do to help bring us closer to a cure.
